Ten years! Yes, on next Tuesday, January 13, La Isla Seattle will celebrate our 10 year anniversary! It’s pretty crazy to think that we got our start at the Sunday Fremont Market. Getting up and going at 7am, setting up our tent, warming up our stoves and getting our staples out there: Pollo Guisado, rice & beans, empanadillas, tostones, arroz con gandules. It was a pretty limited menu, but a good one. A good representation of Puerto Rico. In January of 2005, we opened our doors, not knowing what to expect. As with most start up restaurants, we were shocked by the difficulty of operating a restaurant, yet pleasantly surprised by the support and response. We worked 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week for years, until we finally made our little slice of Puerto Rico a household name in Ballard. Now, 10 years later and with two locations, we can only be thankful for our wonderful staff who has stayed with us (our prep cook in Ballard has been there since August 2004, amongst others who have been there 4+ years) and our guests. All of you reading this who have supported us since day one and continue to do so by coming back and inviting friends and family to experience La Isla. Alfonso and myself are without words and very humbled, so thank you! We look forward to a bright future. Now, on to January’s happenings.



Mofongo Relleno de Churrasco” -Mofongo stuffed with flank steak strips in chimichurri sauce with a side of rice and beans and a small salad. Per usual, Hernan does a great job coming up with great ideas, but this one is a collaboration from Alfonso’s mom (the creator of most of our recipes) and himself. Since Mary just came over from the island for the holidays, she had some input on this truly delicious dish – one you won’t find anywhere in Seattle. Come hungry though and clear your evening. Once you tackle this wonderful special, you may just want to lay around for awhile.



What do you get when you take muddled ginger, a slice of blood orange, champagne and Clement Creole Shrubb Rum? “The Crimson Fizz!” This is a very light and fun cocktail that celebrates the new year and also shows you the versatility of rum and what it has to offer. You can thank all of our bartenders from both locations for coming together and making up this great drink.



Since Ballard is turning 10 years old this month, Justin, Alfy and I thought, ‘let’s go big!’ This event is sure to be one of the best! Ron Zacapa XO, Clement XO, Appleton 21 and El Dorado 21! If you’ve been to all of our rum clubs, or haven’t been to one yet, don’t miss this one. These are some of THE best rums around! Redmond will featuring some unique rums we have never presented before. You’ll have a chance to taste Admiral Rodney, Ron Jeremy 7 and 1931 rum. As usual, Justin has done his homework and we are eagerly awaiting what he has in store. Come celebrate our 10th anniversary in Ballard next Tuesday as we will have some great specials for the day and we would like to personally thank everyone for being a part of the La Isla Cuisine family!
