La Isla Rum Club - Featuring Ron Santa Teresa

After two consecutive nights of La Isla Rum Club, we’re absolutely beat as usual. But what a blast! This month we featured Ron Santa Teresa, a Venezuelan rum rich with over 200 years of history and character. Everything from Ron Santa Teresa is produced at Hacienda Santa Teresa, the oldest licensed distillery in Venezuela. They grow the sugar cane, distill, age, and bottle all of their Rum on-location at this beautiful region just southwest of Caracas.

Led by La Isla Seattle’s General Manager, Cameron Sanai took us on a tour of  Santa Teresa’s best rums, including their Anejo1796 and Selecto. We kicked off the night with the Anejo, which is a premium blend, aged up to five years and great for mixing. We then tasted the 1796, learning that it ages up to twenty-five years prior to bottling through a unique aging process which includes four barrels stacked on top of each other. The ’76 was Alfonso Gonzalez, La Isla Co-Owner’s favorite, “I love it. It has good balance. It’s not too sweet or spicy!”

A special treat came at the end of the night when we got to taste the White Label Rum from 3 Howls, a distillery based here in Seattle. Will Mascheimer, CEO and Distiller at Three Howls was on-site and we got to hear a little bit about how he started his distilling business. “He trained at the Artisan Craft Distilling Institute, volunteered at local distilleries, and fermented anything he could get his hands on.” Three Howls makes just about every type of spirit, but we had our eyes on their White Label, made from sweet Barbados molasses and pure sugar cane distilled here in the Pacific Northwest.

All rum was accompanied by delicious Puerto Rican cuisine tailored to compliment each rum, and creating exclusively for Rum Club by our Chef Forrest. For this particular occasion, Forrest infused each dish with a little Venezuelan flavor.

It was so good to see all of our usual Rum Bums, as well as some curious new faces. If you’re getting hooked on Rum Club, don’t worry, it’s a healthy addiction.
