With the coming of November, there’s a change in the air: the days are shorter, colder and the holidays are just around the corner. It’s a great time of year to look forward to and get nostalgic about the holidays and memories we cherish with our friends and family.
And if the cold has you down or the 14 hours of darkness are too much, don’t forget you can come on in and visit us. Once you step inside we will help you forget you’re in Washington and hopefully the vibrancy and warmth of the island begin to melt away reality a bit-it’s a nice break to have!
Let’s get to what’s happening this month:
PASTELES ARE BACK!
Yes, they are back, just in time for the holidays! For those of you not familiar with them, they are a very cherished and typical recipe from Puerto Rico and are very common in the household during the holidays. Think of it like a version of tamales but Puerto Rican style: instead of corn though the masa we use is ground green bananas with achiote oil. You can request it be stuffed with the following 4 choices: ground beef, pulled pork, stewed chicken or our veggie/tofu mix. This is then wrapped in a banana leaf, parchment paper and tied.
We will have these available on Monday November 24th and you can either stop by one of our locations and pick them up, or pre-order by calling in or sending us and email. All pasteles come frozen and will require a 1 hour boil in water to then enjoy this special holiday treat. We’d like to note that they are a very special treat and supplies are limited.
Chef Hernan never ceases to amaze me with the specials he comes up with. This month we are offering Chuletas Can Can with roasted butter nut squash, mashed with butter and sofrito, alongside tostones and small salad.
In keeping with the holidays, our bar staff ironed out the details to come out with our new drink special-muddled ginger, cranberry and Chairman’s Reserved Spiced rum, served in a sugar rimmed bucket over ice with a sprinkle of cinnamon. We give you: The Little Rummer Boy!
