Diplomático?! Yes, Please.

This past Tuesday we had the great honor of unveiling the rums of Diplomático to the state of Washington for the first time in almost two years! We were very privileged to have Alex Mejido, U.S. portfolio manager for Diplomático on hand to talk about Diplomático rums and the processes that make this Venezuelan rum the most awarded rum in the world.

The first of three rums to be tasted on the evening was the Diplomático Anejo. Aged four years in small oak barrels,  the youngest of the Diplomático rums was a of great surprise in it’s smoothness. The oaky spice and cocoa made for great opening to the evenings event. Chef Hernan and Chef Eric collaborated for the second week in a row on the small plates and our “Rum Bums” raved over the flavor profiles. The Anejo was paired with Tequeños con Guasacaca. The flaky, deep fried cheese stick was made with white cheese and accompanied by a spicy avocado dipping sauce…it was SO delicious. Good job Hernan and Eric.

The second sipping rum of the night was Diplomático Reserva. Also aged in small bourbon barrels, the 8 year Reserva had a soft sherry nose followed by light caramel and vanilla taste that actually made me sigh. The extraordinary body and balance made it only to easy in revisiting the Reserva later in the evening. Consorting with Reserva was Carne Mechada; Venezuela’s national dish. This plate was filled tender, shredded beef and seasoned with sofrito, red and yellow bell peppers. I know the guys did a great job on this dish because Alfonso couldn’t stop talking about how awesome the Carne Mechada and Reserva paired together. My full plate of beef disappeared shortly after Alfonso’s comment…

The final rum of the night was Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva and please let me speak for everyone when I say this rum is in a world of it’s own.  Copper pot stilled and aged in white oak, the Reserva Exclusiva was like cotton candy on the 4th of July. On the nose, frosted angel food cake, banana and vanilla excited my senses to the point that I’m actually grabbing one right this moment….oh, Reserva Exclusiva. My young palate can’t do this rum the proper descriptors it deserves, so here’s the official Diplomático tasting notes: The palate evokes chocolate sauce and the sweet toffee, fudge and tropical fruit flavors from the nose. Flakes of Terry’s dark Chocolate Orange’s wrinkled over melted vanilla ice cream. Deep, vivid and extremely seductive flavors. YES PLEASE.

Our dessert portion of the menu and final small plate was a coconut flan served with homemade whipped cream and a crumbled coconut cookie. We couldn’t have been more happy with the final pairing…just like kids at a sugar-fueled birthday party.

Special thanks go out to Alex Mejido, Rocky Yeh, Hernan & Eric, Brett (official Rum Club bartender), Danielle, and of course Jason and Alfonso for continually advancing our knowledge and taste in rum.

Be on the lookout in the near future for Diplomático Ambassador at both our locations. This is a rum that should probably never, ever be opened…but we’re willing to share.

Cheers,

Justin
