Typically, summer doesn’t start in the Pacific Northwest until July 5th-most of us who have lived here long enough know that it isn’t June 21-the ‘official’ day according to the calendar. But something is different this year: we are seeing many more nice, sunny days, we are shaking off the wetness of winter and unpredictability of spring, we are heading outside, enjoying the sun and finding any outdoor patio we can sit on.
Our head chef, Hernan, has come up with a very traditional and amazing new dish for both locations this month: Mofongo de Mariscos, or Seafood Mofongo. This mofongo is traditionally made by our staff and accompanied with chunks of lobster, octopus & shrimp, bathed in a creole/mojito sauce! You can get it as an entrée, or by itself. Whichever way you choose, don’t miss this-you can’t find anything like this anywhere close to here!
One of the things we love to do is give our staff some time to play with concoctions and come up with new drink recipes that we can use to introduce to all of our guests. Karen, a long time Ballard bartender, has done it again with her new drink that we call simply, ‘Coco Crush.’ Think tropical, fruity, coconutty goodness-somewhat similar to a piña colada, but served in a chilled martini glass-it’s a great drink and goes well with sitting on the patio.
Last month, I met with the owner of the Old Ballard Liquor Company, Lexi. She stopped by to introduce a new Aquavit that is traditionally made using high quality ingredients in an approachable and pragmatic manner. We love local and love what they’re doing (check them out here.) I tasted it, took it in and so far, it’s been received pretty well. When she stopped in again, we started talking cocktails with Aquavit. ‘WHAT?!’ Yes, you read it right. So we assigned another one of our bartenders, Connor, to come up with something special; he did not disappoint. Think of a lemon drop with mint and Aquavit-trust me when I say the drink is delicious-familiar, yet different and refreshing! Everyone we tasted it out to kinda shrugged when we told them what it was, but when they tasted it, there were lots of happy faces!
This week kicks off a couple of events for both locations:
- Tuesday nights from 6-10pm, we are offering half off ALL wine at La Isla Cuisine. Bring a guest with you and sit down and enjoy our simple, but flavorful wine menu and pair it with some great Puerto Rican food.
- Wednesday night from 9pm-close, we are starting Industry Night-come out with your friends, get some late night food and specials!
- Thursday is ‘Girls Night Out’ from 6-midnight, take solace in out tropical menu along with our brand new ‘Rumtini’ menu. We think you might just like what you see. We’ve come up with 5 new drinks that are martinis, but with a rum base!
Our last big news for the month of June is the FIFA World Cup being hosted in Brazil. Once again, we are opening our doors for EVERY game of the series, even the 9am games (which we will serve our delicious brunch menu). Come join us and root for your favorite country in what is going to be another spectacular showing of the ‘beautiful game.’ Click here for the FIFA site.
We hope to see you here for it!
Lastly, Alfonso and I would like to say thank you. Thank you for choosing to dine with us and make La Isla Cuisine what it is. We’ve been doing this for over 9 years now and we can’t thank you enough for the support we have received and continue to receive from guests like you. As always, any feedback we can get from you, good or bad, is always received and we will continue to do our best in making our little islands of Puerto Rico in the northwest, the best they can.
