I love September—it’s my favorite month of the year. The sun is still shining, the fall colors appear, there is a crispness to the air that is nostalgic for many memories of the past. It’s a bittersweet time: the craziness of summer is dying down, the patio is not seeing as much action, we’re beginning to think about Sancocho and PastelesCoquito and hot buttered rum. Ahh, there is much to look forward to, but still, those summer days hang prominent in our minds….

But, we still have some time to have fun in the sun, enjoy La Isla’s patios, and soak up the last of the warmth before the cold, rainy season of fall comes into full effect. To help all of you out, we have some great food and drink specials, along with a couple cool events we’d like to share with you for September.

Once again, our chef and main man in the kitchen, Hernan, has come up with another entree that is sure to please! A bbq style half chicken with tamarind glaze. This chicken is oven roasted to tender perfection, glazed with our homemade tamarind barbecue sauce, then sautéed and oven finished to give it a great, tender flavor. Enjoy it two ways: with a side of apple crisp potato salad (great as a lunch special) or with the traditional fixings of Abuela’s rice and beans, and green side salad. We’re still holding onto summer with this one!

Hurricane season is here! Well, not the typical hurricanes you find in the Caribbean this time of year, but the drink, ‘The Hurricane’. This classic cocktail finds it’s roots all the way back to World War II. Whiskey was in high demand, but at that time, supplies were scarce. However, rum was cheap and plentiful, but nobody was drinking it. Since bars were sitting on cases of rum and didn’t know what to do, a New Orleans bar mixed up a fruity concoction with lots of rum and served it in a hurricane lamp. Since we can’t go to New Orleans and get this classic cocktail, stop by La Isla and enjoy the fruity, yet strong mixture of light and dark rums with passion fruit juice.

A close relative of mine contacted us earlier this year about sponsoring her team for the 3-day Susan G. Komen event taking place September 19-21st. As business owners, we get a lot of businesses and people wanting donations to help support their cause or donate to fund raisers, but this one was a no brainer for us. Breast cancer has hit us all in some shape or form and we are honored to have donated and support this wonderful cause for those currently battling, or who have lost the battle to breast cancer. The non-profit we are supporting is the ‘Valley Girls & Guys’ located out of Ravensdale.

You can check out their Facebook Page HERE

If you would also like more information on the 3-day, visit Good luck to all of the teams out there gunning for this great cause. We’ll see you all after the walk!

Before I sign off, I’d like to remind everyone that Alfonso and I love getting feedback from everyone – good and bad.  Getting your opinions, hearing about your experiences only helps us to become better business owners and make La Isla Cuisine the best that it can be. You can always fill out a comment card at each of our locations, or email us at We also encourage all of you and your friends to write Yelp reviews and share your experiences on our Facebook page because, again, we are here to make your experience the best it can!
As always, thanks for the support. Enjoy the great days of fall!
